Aside from a beautiful feed with an aesthetically pleasing theme and engagement, there is something very simple that you can do to easily optimize your ranking in Instagram’s search functionality.
Guide to Optimizing your Account
First thing is to understand how Instagram’s search works (this is independent from your feed – that’s a little bit more complicated). Instagram search ranks the relevance of your username as priority followed by your name. Searches are also automatically populated based on your location, Instagram puts relevance as a high priority to ensure you, as a viewer won’t see results from Singapore.
Step 1: Username
Update your username if it allows for it (if you are an established business, skip step 1 and move to step 2). You want to select a name that has a single industry keyword that best describes what you do. For example. If you are in the real estate business, the word “realty” and “realestate” will increase your ranking. If you are a blogger, insert the name “blog”.
Step 2: Your Profile Name
This is ranked second in the Instagram search algorithm. My recommendation is to put your real name then paired with a keyword. For Example: Grace Hui | Lifestyle Blogger or Grace Hui | Social Media Management. Keep in mind you can only have a name no more than 30 characters.
Step 3: Profile Description
What kind of inspiration will you be provided to your audience? Is it a feed about wellness, food, lifestyle or the best tacos in your town? Let them know and be sure to stick with it.
Step 4: Turn your Profile to Business
This is an absolutely must. To turn your profile to business you must have a Facebook Page set up (this is easy) and then link the two. What you get from Instagram directly are insights to your demographics, best time to post and also the performance of your content segmented by Impressions, Reach, Engagement, Likes, Comments and more.
*Tip: If you toggle to business don’t toggle back to personal, otherwise your data will be erased.
