What is Barre and what are it’s benefits?
I’ll be starting my #wellnesswednesday series and today we’re talking about posture! As of young, my posture has been terrible. Hunched over desks, working on my laptop in my bed, standing hunched over, you name it. I’ve visited the chiropractor before as well and it wasn’t all that helpful until exercise came into my life.
Barre is a combination of ballet and pilates with a focus on isolation to help tone your body. These small micro movements with weights and large amount of repetitions shapes the muscles creating a leaner body without getting the chunky look. It’s a full body workout including upper back, chest, bi-ceps, triceps, obliques, abs, glutes, thighs and calves. Within a course of 3 consecutive months, you’ll start to see results. Barre is a journey not like crossfit where its intense workouts with speedy results. Barre is more of an on-going journey.
Benefits of Barre
I’ve been going to barre for approximately 5 months now and I absolutely love it, here’s why:
- Corrected my over 20 years of poor posture: With Barre class, the high number of repetitions with light weights truly solved the problem by building chest and upper back muscles, I am not standing more upright than ever. If you ever feel like giving up or see it as “I’ve been hunched over for so long…what’s the point” or “Perhaps self reminders to stand up will suffice?”. Those are tales I’ve told myself for a long time and I do truly believe that with effort, and some type of upper back strengthening, you can also live a well postured life.
- Sculpting: Lean! The movements you do are micro movements so they really work the muscle each group at a time. It doesn’t create that bulkiness you get from heavy weight and you’ll find yourself with a slight defined body throughout your journey
- Community: The barre community is positive. There is no pressure to win because there is nothing to win. There is no “who runs the fastest, who bikes the furthest, or who lifts the most”. There are set weights and you go at your own pace! Absolutely no stress and no competition. We all have one goal in mind which is to live a healthier life.
